Ambitions are low: The Rise of Black

Within the last two years, a trend which was born in the 80’s with the emergence of post-punk and new wave, has surfaced again. Gaining status in London recently, it has reminded borderline ‘goths’ of the simpler answer to tacky corsets and fishnet tights. Simple black in textured fabrics, layered and long. Schiffon, leather, mesh and laddered wool are the dominant contrasts to plain black cotton. Sometimes, in the ‘new romantic’ fashion, taking a nod from Victorian costumes, but mostly the looks that are being replicated to a tea are those seen on the fans of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure and Joy Division.
